What Data We Collect

  • •Account Information: Email address and name for account creation and identification
  • •Trading Activity: All trades, entry/exit prices, portfolio activity, and paper trading balances
  • •Learning Progress: Lesson completion, quiz scores, badges earned, and points
  • •Reflections: Written reflections on trades describing your reasoning and lessons learned. Some of this text is sent to a third-party AI provider — see AI Processing of Your Writing below.

How We Use Your Data

  • •To provide and operate the ClearTrading paper trading simulation
  • •To track your educational progress in assigned courses
  • •To allow your enrolled professor to monitor your activity and provide feedback
  • •To improve the ClearTrading platform and learning experience

Data Sharing

Your trades, reflections, and lesson progress are visible to your enrolled professor.

This visibility is required for academic participation and allows your professor to:

  • Monitor your trading activity and decision-making
  • Grade your reflections and provide personalized feedback
  • Track your learning progress through lessons and quizzes
  • Identify areas where you need additional support

What we do NOT do: We do not sell your data to third parties, use your data for marketing, or share your information outside of your enrolled class.

AI Processing of Your Writing

Some of what you write is sent to a third-party AI provider.

When you use the AI Coach on the pre-trade questions, the three answers you wrote are transmitted to an external large language model service to produce its response. The same service generates the Market Context summaries shown on asset pages. No other part of the platform sends your writing to an AI service — feedback from your professor is written by your professor.

  • What is sent: the text of your answers and the name of the asset you are looking at.
  • What is not sent: your name, email address, student ID, portfolio balance, or any identifier linking the text back to you.
  • Why: to generate the coaching question you asked for. The request is made only when you press the button.
  • Retention: your reflections are stored in ClearTrading and visible to your enrolled professor, as described above. Once text reaches the model provider it is handled under that provider's terms, which we do not control.

AI-generated output can be wrong. Coaching questions, feedback, and market summaries are prompts for your own thinking, not verified fact — market context items link to their sources so you can check them yourself.

Using the AI Coach is optional. You can answer the pre-trade questions and place a practice trade without it.

Data Security

Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption and is not shared outside your class without your consent. Access to your data is restricted to your enrolled professor and ClearTrading administrators.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • •Access a copy of your data
  • •Request correction of inaccurate data
  • •Request deletion of your account (subject to academic record retention requirements)

FERPA Compliance

ClearTrading complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

As a student using ClearTrading through your institution, you have the following FERPA rights:

  • The right to inspect and review your educational records maintained by ClearTrading
  • The right to request correction of records you believe are inaccurate or misleading
  • The right to consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information except to the extent FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent
  • The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures to comply with FERPA

Your trading activity, reflections, and learning progress constitute educational records under FERPA and are shared only with your enrolled professor and authorized institutional administrators.
