What Data We Collect

  • •Account Information: Email address and name for account creation and identification
  • •Trading Activity: All trades, entry/exit prices, portfolio activity, and paper trading balances
  • •Learning Progress: Lesson completion, quiz scores, badges earned, and points
  • •Pre-trade thesis and sources: The answers you write before a trade and the sources you cite, with their links. Your thesis is kept as written and is never edited after you place the trade.
  • •Reflections: Written reflections on trades describing your reasoning and lessons learned. Every version you save is kept, so your original and your current text both exist. Some of this text is sent to a third-party AI provider; see AI Processing of Your Writing below.
  • •Instructor feedback: Written feedback and any grade your instructor gives on a reflection, with who wrote it and when. Every version is kept.
  • •Confidence surveys: Short self-rating questions asked at orientation and again about six weeks later. Your answers are used only in class-level aggregates and never shown as your individual score.
  • •Optional demographics: Class year, area of study, first-generation status and military connection, only if you turn on aggregate reporting. Used solely in group counts, suppressed for any group smaller than five, and removable at any time in Settings.
  • •AI Coach use: Whether you ran, skipped or bypassed the AI Coach on a trade, which version of the coach was in use, the challenge questions the coach showed you, and your answer before and after each one. This is kept with your trade so your instructor can see how your reasoning was challenged. Only what you saw on screen is kept; nothing the AI produced privately is stored.
  • •Security records: Sign-in events, trade actions and administrative actions are logged with your account identifier for security and audit purposes. We do not collect your device details, location or IP address in the app.

How We Use Your Data

  • •To provide and operate the ClearTrading paper trading simulation
  • •To track your educational progress in assigned courses
  • •To allow your enrolled professor to monitor your activity and provide feedback
  • •To improve the ClearTrading platform and learning experience

Data Sharing

Your trades, reflections, and lesson progress are visible to your enrolled professor.

This visibility is required for academic participation and allows your professor to:

  • Monitor your trading activity and decision-making
  • Grade your reflections and provide personalized feedback
  • Track your learning progress through lessons and quizzes
  • Identify areas where you need additional support

What we do NOT do: We do not sell your data to third parties, use your data for marketing, or share your information outside of your enrolled class.

AI Processing of Your Writing

Some of what you write is sent to a third-party AI provider.

When you use the AI Coach on the pre-trade questions, the three answers you wrote are transmitted to an external large language model service to produce its response. The same service drafts the Market Context summaries shown on asset pages, from the ticker alone; ClearTrading then opens every source it cites and shows only what it can confirm. No other part of the platform sends your writing to an AI service. Feedback from your professor is written by your professor.

What the coach is allowed to do: question your reasoning, ask for evidence, challenge an assumption, point out a missing counterargument, and ask what would prove you wrong. What it is not allowed to do: recommend a stock or fund, tell you to buy, sell or hold, write your thesis or answers, suggest a target or stop price, or tell you how anything is scored. These rules are written into the coach's instructions, the instructions are versioned, and the version in use is recorded on your trade.

AI output never affects your points, competency scores, cycle scores, badges or grades. It only shows you a question.

  • What is sent: the text of your answers and the name of the asset you are looking at.
  • What is not sent: your name, email address, student ID, portfolio balance, or any identifier linking the text back to you.
  • Why: to generate the coaching question you asked for. The request is made only when you press the button.
  • Provider: requests are routed through the Base44 platform's model integration to a large language model. We are confirming the provider's identity and its data retention terms with the platform and will update this section when we have them in writing. We do not claim that the provider does not retain or learn from submitted text until that is confirmed.
  • Retention: your reflections are stored in ClearTrading and visible to your enrolled professor, as described above. Once text reaches the model provider it is handled under that provider's terms, which we do not control.

AI-generated output can be wrong. Coaching questions, feedback, and market summaries are prompts for your own thinking, not verified fact. ClearTrading opens every source a market context item cites and drops anything it cannot confirm, so that panel is often short or empty. Check the source yourself before you rely on it.

Using the AI Coach is optional. You can answer the pre-trade questions and place a practice trade without it.

Data Security

ClearTrading runs on the Base44 platform and is served over encrypted connections. Every read and write is checked on the server against your role and your class, and students cannot write their own scores, points or grades. Access to your data is restricted to you, your enrolled professor and ClearTrading administrators. We have not yet had an independent security review; see our security documentation for the current status of each control.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • •Access a copy of your data
  • •Request correction of inaccurate data
  • •Request deletion of your account (subject to academic record retention requirements)

Educational Records

ClearTrading is designed to limit access to student educational records to the student, authorized instructors, and authorized administrators based on their role and relationship to the applicable class or program. ClearTrading does not claim independent FERPA certification. When used by an educational institution, privacy, data-use, retention, and educational-record responsibilities may also be governed by the institution's policies and applicable agreements with Starter Legacy LLC.

Your trading activity, theses, reflections, feedback and learning progress are shared only with your enrolled instructor and authorized administrators. Institution-specific data agreements may be established as part of a deployment.

You can ask for a copy of your records or ask for your account to be deleted by contacting us at the address below or through your institution. Deletion may be subject to your institution's record retention requirements.
